Maryland Food Bank Needs More Donations For Hungry Families

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—The Maryland Food Bank needs your help to feed even more people this year who don't know where their next meal is coming from.

Christie Ileto has more.

Thirty million pounds of food. That's how much the Maryland Food Bank says it expects to distribute this year.

"Donations come in a lot," said employee Anthony Dickens.

And while the public's help has been steady, Dickens says "We could always use more!"

"There's 460,000 people that don't know where their next meal is coming from," said Kate Sam, Maryland Food Bank.

The food will go to families, who Sam says haven't gotten back on their feet since the economy took a hit.

"Unemployment benefits are running out, and they don't qualify for programs like food stamps," Sam said.

And while those who are without need the Maryland Food Bank's help, Sam says they need yours.

"As quick as it's in, it's right back out in the community," she said."So we really continue to need public support, especially food and funds."

To give you an idea of just how great the need is at the Maryland Food Bank, years ago shelves would have sat full of donated food, but today sit half empty.

"Around this time it's going to be empty because the need is just that great to fill," said Dickens.

Dickens sees first-hand the donations that come in and just how great the need has become in the community. It's a need the Food Bank says they can't address without your help.
