Middletown Beats Frederick Douglass 30-12 In 2A
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Tim Pirrone threw for three touchdowns and Zach Welch rushed for one score and kicked a field goal and two extra points to lead Middletown past Frederick Douglass 30-12 Saturday in a rematch of last year's Maryland 2A state title game.
Middletown (14-0), which defeated Douglass 43-6 in 2011, overcame a slow start. Pirrone, who was 4 of 15 for 75 yards, connected with Sean Wenner on an 11-yard strike with 9:12 left in the half. Welch, who hit the left upright on his first extra-point attempt, later connected on a 23-yard field goal for a 9-0 lead.
Douglass (12-2) marched deep into Knights' territory late in the half, but Paul Harris had his 26-yard field-goal attempt blocked and Middletown's Cody Martin raced 95 yards for the apparent touchdown. However, an inadvertent whistle nullified the score.
The Eagles' Devin Butler connected with Demory Monroe for a 59-yard third-quarter TD.
