ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Anne Arundel County schools superintendent has proposed a $1 billion budget, the largest in the system's history.

Kevin Maxwell proposed the 2014 budget on Wednesday. The County Council has final say on the budget. It is a 3 percent increase over fiscal year 2013.

Maxwell's proposal includes more than $153 million for renovation projects at 10 schools, including the completion of construction at Point Pleasant Elementary in Glen Burnie and the new Phoenix Academy.

The Capital of Annapolis reports that public hearings on the proposed schools budget will be conducted Jan. 8 and Jan. 10.
