Contest To Name Monocacy Tributaries Nears End

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A contest to give names to six tributaries of the Monocacy River has drawn more than two dozen entries.

The Monocacy Scenic River Citizens Advisory Board says Monday is the last day to submit proposed names for the streams. There are three in Frederick County and three in Carroll County.

Project leader Scott Scarfone says the contest is intended to raise public awareness about the importance of water resources.

The board will select its favorite entries in the new year and send them to the U.S. Geological Survey, the official keeper of geographical names. It could take the federal agency up to nine months to review and approve the names.
