Carroll County Sheriff's Office Official Resigns After Being Charged With Misconduct

TOWSON, Md. (AP) -- The commander of the Criminal Investigations Division of the Carroll County Sheriff's Department resigned Wednesday after being charged with misconduct in office.

State Prosecutor Emmet Davitt alleges that Major Nicholas Plazio falsely reported to the Office of the State's Attorney for Carroll County and falsely testified in Carroll County Circuit Court in two criminal cases.

Later Wednesday, Sheriff Kenneth Tregon said he had accepted Plazio's resignation.

The state prosecutor said charges in a first-degree murder case and related offenses for another person were eventually dismissed as a result of suppression of substantial portions of the state's evidence.

According to stories in The Carroll County Times earlier this year, charges against Russell Scott Laderer Jr. and Cassandra Glover, accused in the death of their neighbor, were dropped in March.

Jeremiah DeMario, 25, was found fatally stabbed outside his Hampstead apartment Sept. 13, 2010. Laderer had been charged with first-degree murder and Glover was charged with accessory after the fact in DeMario's death.

Tregoning said the Sheriff's Office is cooperating with the investigation.
