National Symphony To Spend Week On D.C.'s U Street

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The National Symphony Orchestra is making its home in Washington's U Street, Shaw and Logan Circle neighborhoods this week.

The orchestra is opening a series of free performances and events Tuesday in area theaters, schools, churches and other gathering spots. The NSO In Your Neighborhood series runs through Jan. 14.

An opening concert is planned Tuesday night at the newly reopened Howard Theatre, followed by an ensemble performance at Ben's Chili Bowl.

Recitals and ensemble performances are also planned at Howard University, the 9:30 Club, the Lincoln Theatre and in restaurants, jazz clubs and churches.

Howard University will host a concert by the full symphony on Jan. 14. Jazz pianist Jason Moran and Howard's a cappella ensemble Afro Blue are slated to perform with the orchestra.
