Trooper Cleared In Wrongful Death Trial
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A jury in Frederick has cleared a Maryland State Police trooper in a wrongful death trial stemming from a shooting in Libertytown in 2010.
The News-Post of Frederick reports that the jury returned the verdict Friday afternoon clearing Sgt. Eric Corbin of wrongdoing in the death of Veronica Harding-Perkins.
Plaintiff Dean Perkins had claimed that Corbin was too quick to use deadly force during a confrontation with Perkins' drunken wife. He claimed police could have saved Harding-Perkins' life had they not waited nearly five hours to re-enter the home after the shooting.
Corbin maintained he fired because Harding-Perkins pointed a gun at him. Police said they didn't try to re-enter the house sooner because they feared she was still capable of shooting.
