Md. Lawmaker Wants To Lift School Gun Restrictions

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- An Eastern Shore lawmaker says he wants to lift restrictions on who can carry guns on school grounds.

Delegate Mike McDermott says he has introduced two bills on the issue. One bill would give school boards and superintendents the option to designate teachers, staff or administrators, who would be eligible for a concealed carry permit to bring guns onto school grounds. The other would allow off-duty or retired police officers who are still qualified under the Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act to carry weapons on school grounds.

McDermott, who represents Wicomico and Worcester Counties, told The Daily Times of Salisbury that he was looking outside the box for ideas on protecting students.
