Report Shows Performance Gaps In Montgomery Co. Education

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- A new report says gaps in student achievement are widening by some measures in Montgomery County public schools.

The disparities in performance separating white and Asian students from black and Latino students has long been cause for concern in the racially diverse county.

Now a 130-page report by the County Council's Office of Legislative Oversight shows wider gaps in some areas, including in performance on Advanced Placement exams and SAT tests among graduates. Gaps in school readiness and graduation rates were, however, reduced.

Superintendent Joshua Starr said in a letter accompanying the report that the school system is seeking additional funding aimed at helping reduce some of the disparities.
