Driver Killed In Crash; Officer Hurt In Rescue Try

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) -- Prince George's County Police say a driver was killed in a single-vehicle crash and an officer who tried to free him from the burning wreckage was injured.

It happened about 12:40 p.m. Monday in Landover. Police say an SUV driven by Rodwell McNeill Jr., 70, of Glenarden was traveling west on Martin Luther King Highway when it hit a guardrail.

Authorities say the SUV careened sideways down the road, came to rest of the driver's side and caught fire. Three county officers tried to rescue McNeill but flames forced them back.

Police say McNeill died in the crash. One officer was burned on his face and hands and taken to a local hospital.

Police say speed was a factor in the crash, which is under investigation.
