Nearly 7,000 Ticketed For Speeding On ICC

LAUREL, Md. (AP) -- Nearly 7,000 speeding tickets have been issued to drivers on the Intercounty Connector since it opened in November 2011.

That's according to documents obtained by WTOP, which reports that nearly 200 of the tickets were to drivers traveling less than 65 mph in a 55 mph zone.

The speed limit rises Saturday on the roadway from 55 mph to 60 mph. The change followed a Maryland Transportation Authority study that found the highway can support the higher speed limit without any safety risk.

The documents show a half-dozen drivers were ticketed for going more than 55 mph, but less than 60 mph. And 16 were caught driving over 100 mph.
