Md. May Start Razing Old State Hospital Soon

MARRIOTTSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Department of General Services says it's accelerating its schedule for demolishing the abandoned Henryton State Hospital in Marriottsville.

Assistant Secretary Bart Thomas tells the Carroll County Times that state officials are worried someone will be hurt at the site.

A Sykesville Fire Department official says the complex of about 15 buildings has become a gathering place for teens and drug addicts.

A fire there on March 17 destroyed a two-story structure. The fire department said last April that there had been at least 12 suspicious fires at the former tuberculosis ward and psychiatric hospital.

The hospital was scheduled for demolition in May 2014. Thomas says an architect and engineer have been given an accelerated timeline for producing information for contractors to bid on a demolition contract.
