Man & His 4-Year-Old Daughter Shot While Sitting In Car

OVERLEA, Md. (WJZ) --  A 4-year-old girl was shot in Baltimore County. Police are trying to find the gunman and why the girl and her father were apparently targeted.

Adam May reports the motive remains a mystery and the victims did not live in the neighborhood.

Police have no idea what motivated this crime, but the father and daughter are expected to survive their injuries.

Residents in the quiet Overlea neighborhood can't believe the news. A 4-year-old girl and her 23-year-old father were both shot while sitting in a car at the intersection of Old Home and Meadow roads.

"I'm shocked. I've lived here.  I live in my grandparents' house. Three generations of people. In this neighborhood, it's just unheard of and it's scary," a neighbor said.

Police say it happened around 8:15 p.m. Monday.

Virginia Fox, who lives a few doors down from the intersection, told WJZ she heard a single gunshot.

"I heard this loud bang, and it scared my dog and it scared me so I locked my door and went to bed," Fox said.

Police will not reveal many details, including how many shots were fired.

"We do want neighbors in the community to know we do not believe this was random. We do believe that the victims and the assailant were known to one another," said Elise Armacost, Baltimore County Police spokesperson.

An outstanding question: was the 4-year-old girl targeted?

"A child, really? But you know, when they're going into schools and blowing kids away, nobody's safe," a neighbor said.

A third person , the driver of the vehicle, was not injured and was able to give police a description of the suspect.

The driver drove the victims to the father's home, and a family member drove the injured father and daughter to Franklin Square Hospital. The victims were treated for non-life threatening injuries. Hospital personnel notified 911 at 8:17 p.m.

Detectives were back on the scene Tuesday morning interviewing area residents and looking for eyewitnesses.

The investigation is ongoing.
