DNR: Permits Required For Large Boat Gatherings

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland's Department of Natural Resources is reminding boaters that permits are now required for large gatherings on the water.

DNR officials say permits are required for gatherings of 100 or more vessels that last longer than three hours. Officials say the new rules allow the department and other agencies to ensure the safety of participants, other boaters and surrounding communities. DNR officials say permit applications cost $100.

Maryland Natural Resources Police say events such as the annual Bumper Bash on the Magothy River that has drawn more than 1,000 boats led them to seek the legislation. Organizers of the event said they decided not to hold it last year, but hundreds still turned out for the July event that has drawn complaints from property owners about drunken behavior and fighting.
