Md. Man Pleads Guilty To Involuntary Manslaughter

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Maryland man has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol in the death of a pedestrian in northeast Washington.

Joel Bromwell, 32, of Annapolis entered the plea Wednesday in Superior Court in the death of Ruby L. Whitfield. He faces a maximum of 30 years in prison at sentencing Aug. 30.

According to government evidence, on March 21, Whitfield, 71, was crossing Florida Avenue NE in a crosswalk when Bromwell hit her and did not stop, dragging her body about 86 feet. Prosecutors say Bromwell drove off after being confronted by a witness, and was arrested a short time later.
