Police Disperse Salisbury Crowd With Pepper Spray

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- Police in Salisbury say officers used pepper spray to disperse a large crowd after rocks and bottles were thrown at officers.

Police Chief Barbara Duncan told The Daily Times of Salisbury that officers were called to the scene because of reports of a large crowd.

Police say 500 to 700 people, including college students, were gathered near Hazel Avenue and Smith Street late Saturday afternoon. Duncan said officers used pepper spray because of the bottles and rocks that were being thrown at them.

The police chief said five people are facing charges, but their names and the charges were not immediately available. The crowd was dispersed and no injuries were reported.
