Laurel Man In Custody For Fatal Shooting Of Wife, Stepdaughter; Son Escaped

LAUREL, Md. (WJZ)— A family tragedy leaves neighbors shocked. Police say a father killed his wife and stepdaughter; a teenage boy escaped just in time.

Adam May has more on the crime and the investigation.

Neighbors are stunned, saying the family seemed normal and happy.

Armed SWAT teams swarmed a quiet Laurel neighborhood after a 59-year-old man called police, admitting he just shot his wife and stepdaughter.

"When the gunman called 911, he was inside the home, advising he killed his family, was going to kill himself and he was obviously armed," said Julie Parker.

His young teenage son also called police after running from the home, claiming his father tried killing him, too.

Neighbors watched a brief, tense standoff.

"They had the barricades; we saw they broke into the house," said neighbor Rachel Gilberts.

Prince George's County police released a picture of Ronnie Rainey being taken into custody after he peacefully surrendered. Inside the home, police found the bodies of 50-year-old Lisa Rainey and 27-year-old Ariale Shelton. Both had obvious gun wounds.

"The women were discovered on the first floor, not far from the front door," Parker said.

Pictures of Facebook portrayed a happy, successful couple that worked in defense and loved their children.

It's a crime neighbors will never understand.

"Why? And if he was that upset, why didn't he just kill himself? Why does he have to kill other people?" said the Brays, who live down the street.

Another adult male ran from the home. He was not injured.

Formal charges are pending.
