Ocean City Plans Safety Campaign For Pedestrians

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) -- Ocean City is partnering with Maryland highway officials to launch a pedestrian safety campaign for the busy summer months.

Last summer, two pedestrians were killed and 13 were injured in Ocean City. Officials say it was a significant increase over 2011 when there were no pedestrian deaths and eight injuries.

Ocean City Mayor Richard Meehan says the city is urging visitors to use crosswalks. The city is also planning aggressive police enforcement to address drivers and pedestrians.

In recent months, traffic engineers also have been making changes. They are re-timing signals and evaluating traffic at key intersections. The city is also installing signs reading "no pedestrian crossing" in areas to direct people to crosswalks.

Gov. Martin O'Malley says the campaign is meant to save lives and maintain a safe experience.
