County Executive Wants To Add 100 Firefighters

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman says she will propose legislation to hire 100 firefighters -- a move that will cost $3 million.

Neuman announced the proposal Wednesday, a day after an arbitrator ruled that county firefighters can keep their one-day-on, three-day-off schedule.

Neuman said the county pays a lot of overtime to provide adequate staffing for all shifts.

Republican County Council Chairman Jerry Walker tells The Capital of Annapolis that while he understands the need to increase staffing, he wants to be sure the hirings are justified.
