Leitess Named Anne Arundel County State's Attorney

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Anne Arundel County judges have picked a longtime county prosecutor to serve as state's attorney.

The selection of Anne Colt Leitess by county circuit court judges was announced Thursday afternoon. The 49-year-old Crownsville resident was one of nine candidates vying to succeed Frank Weathersbee, who announced last month that he would retire.

Leitess has been an assistant state's attorney in the county for 23 years and has been the office's trial team leader on violent crimes since 2007. She will serve in the position until the next general election in 2014.

Gov. Martin O'Malley has appointed Weathersbee to the Maryland Parole Commission. Weathersbee had endorsed Deputy State's Attorney Thomas Fleckenstein to succeed him.
