Deputies Corral Escaped Cows Along Interstate 81

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Law enforcement officers spent hours trying to round up five cows that escaped from a farm near Hagerstown onto Interstate 81.

The brazen bovines made their escape through a break in a fence about 2 p.m. Wednesday and wandered along the shoulder of the interstate.

The beef cattle would disappear into dense brush and woods along the highway.

Washington County sheriff's deputies and Maryland State Police troopers tried to keep the animals in one place.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports that the owner of the cows arrived with a trailer, as did Franklin Barr Jr., who had a tranquilizer rifle.

Eventually, some of the cows were shot with tranquilizers and forced into the trailer. It was not known if all five cows made it back to the farm.
