Police Detective Convicted Of Lying About Shooting

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A Baltimore police detective who claimed he was shot by another man and sought worker's compensation has been convicted of perjury and fraud.

A Baltimore Circuit Court jury also convicted Anthony N. Fata Wednesday of misconduct in office. Sentencing is set for Oct. 21.

Fata, a 14-year veteran, said he was shot on Jan. 18, 2011 in a garage near police headquarters by another man and returned fire. He suffered a graze wound to his thigh.

Prosecutors say Fata shot himself to obtain worker's compensation benefits.

The police department said in a statement Wednesday that it would move quickly with its internal disciplinary process against Fata.
