National Zoo Celebrates Male Panda's 16th Birthday

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The National Zoo is celebrating the 16th birthday of its male panda, Tian Tian.

The zoo says he'll get a fruitsicle cake Tuesday that will include sweet potatoes, carrots, pears, apples and some juice. Tian Tian and his mate Mei Xiang are the second pair of pandas to live at the zoo and arrived in 2000.

Also on Tuesday the zoo said that it has not yet been able to examine its days-old panda cub for a second time. A team of zookeepers attempted to get a second close look at the cub Tuesday morning but was unable to. The zoo says the cub's mother Mei Xiang positioned her body and the cub so keepers couldn't reach it. The zoo says attempts to distract her also failed.
