Kennedy Center Marks Anniversary of Ala. Bombing

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Kennedy Center is hosting a staged reading of a play to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala.

Actress Phylicia Rashad is directing the reading Sunday of "Four Little Girls: Birmingham 1963" by playwright Christina Ham.

The play examines the segregated climate of 1963 and the civil rights movement when Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley were killed in the bombing. In the play, the girls share their hopes and dreams about the future.

The Kennedy Center is presenting the reading with Project 1 Voice and Howard University. It will feature original music and arrangements by Kathryn Bostic.

Free tickets will be distributed at 5 p.m. for the 6 p.m. performance.
