11 Hurt In 6-Car Pileup On Crain Highway
BRANDYWINE, Md. (WJZ/AP) -- Maryland State Police say 13 people are injured after a multi-car crash and vehicle fire on Crain Highway in Prince George's County.
Prince George's County fire department spokesman Mark Brady tells The Washington Post one victim has life threatening injuries. Two others are in trauma care.
Police say six cars were involved in the crash just after 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Brandywine.
The preliminary investigation indicates a Mercury Marauder was going northbound at an apparent high rate of speed on Rt. 301 near Clymer Drive. Police say the Mercury crossed over the northbound lanes of Rt. 301, continued through the median and entered the fast lane of southbound Rt. 301 where it collided head-on with a Ford F350 pickup. That initiated a chain reaction crash.
The 23-year old driver of the Marauder, Seth Nesbitt, and his 17-year-old passenger, Ian Nesbitt, were both airlifted to Prince George's Hospital Center. Nine others are believed to have been injured and were all transported by ambulances to Southern Maryland Hospital or Prince George's Hospital Center.
The southbound lanes of Route 301 were still closed several hours after the crash.
No charges have been filed at this time, pending the results of the investigation.
Maryland State Police, the Prince George's County Police Department, the State Highway Administration and Prince George's County Fire Department responded to the scene.
