Pasadena Hospice Reveals Patient Info Security Breach

PASADENA, Md. (AP) -- Anne Arundel County police are investigating a security breach that potentially compromised patient information at the Hospice of the Chesapeake.

A two-month internal investigation concluded that a hospice employee had emailed spreadsheets of patient information to a personal account in order to do work from home. That move put at risk personal information of more than 500 patients.

Hospice president Michael McHale tells The Capital of Annapolis that the hospice waited two months to publicly announce the security breach "because we didn't want to jump to conclusions."

The results of the investigation have been turned over to the police, though the Pasadena-based hospice won't say whether the employee was fired.

McHale says some patients and their families have been concerned about what information may have been compromised.
