LEXINGTON PARK, Md. (AP) — The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy shot a man who was allegedly assaulting a woman in Lexington Park.

Police say a man who had been released on Sunday after being charged with assault went back to their home on Monday.

Deputies say the man assaulted the same woman and a 5-year-old with a knife and threatened the woman with a gun.

Authorities say deputies arrived and ordered the man to stop attacking the woman. Officials say he refused and was shot by a deputy.

Police say John Otha Dickens Jr. was treated and released at Prince George’s Hospital Center. He is charged with three counts of assault.
