Md. Lawmaker To Advocate For Minimum Wage Increase

FORESTVILLE, Md. (AP) -- A state lawmaker from Prince George's County is highlighting the difficulty of shopping for food as a minimum-wage earner.

Democratic Del. Aisha Braveboy plans to shop for groceries Thursday morning alongside a low-wage worker who will describe how she manages her food budget.

Maryland's minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, the same as the federal minimum. Braveboy is backing a bill that would raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour by 2016.

The Montgomery and Prince George's county councils and the D.C. Council recently voted to raise the minimum wage in those jurisdictions to $11.50 an hour. The votes follow a national trend in which states and localities are addressing wages in the wake of federal inaction.
