Unions Say Wicomico Educator Pay Lags In Maryland

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- While Wicomico County's educator salaries are higher than the general population's average income, advocates say the county is lagging behind other counties in pay for teachers and principals.

The Daily Times reports Wicomico teacher salaries range between $43,000 and $78,000. But the Association of Public School Administrators and Supervisors says Wicomico's educator salaries lag behind St. Mary's, Cecil and Calvert counties, which have similar student populations.

The group says the average Wicomico principal was paid $92,712 in 2012. In St. Mary's County, the average for a principal was nearly $111,000, and the average was more than $120,000 in Calvert County.

Wicomico County Education Association President Kelly Stephenson says Wicomico ranks at the bottom of the state when comparing teacher salaries. She says teachers move to where the money is.
