Pot Legalization Ballot Initiative Filed In D.C.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Advocates for marijuana legalization want District of Columbia voters to decide whether possession of up to two ounces of pot should be legal in the city.

A ballot initiative filed Friday with the D.C. Board of Elections would also legalize cultivation of up to three marijuana plants at one's home and make it legal to give away up to one ounce of pot.

The first step toward getting the question on the November ballot will be a hearing to determine whether it meets the election board's standards. After that, organizers would have to collect signatures from about 23,000 registered voters.

The D.C. Council is working on a bill that would decriminalize possession of small amounts of pot, but there's little support among city leaders for full-scale legalization.
