Efforts Made To Move Trial Of Laurel Woman Murdered, Dismembered In Ga.

MACON, Ga. (AP) -- Prosecutors say they won't oppose a venue change in the trial of Stephen McDaniel, who is accused of dismembering and killing Mercer University law school graduate Lauren Giddings.

The Telegraph reports that prosecutors said in court papers Wednesday they would not object to a request from defense attorneys that McDaniel's trial be moved out of town. Defense lawyers say extensive news coverage makes it impossible for McDaniel to get a fair trial in Macon.

Judge Howard Simms has not yet ruled on the issue.

If a change of venue is granted, it's possible that McDaniel's trial could be held in Macon -- but with a panel of jurors brought in from another Georgia city.

Authorities accuse McDaniel of killing Giddings, who was from Laurel, Md., in June 2011.
