Charity Plunge Moved To Western Md. State Park

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Humane Society of Washington County says a dispute over the location of its annual Polar Bear Plunge is ending happily.

The group says it has raised more than $23,000 ahead of Saturday's event at Greenbrier State Park. That's more than double the $11,000 raised last year, when the event was held in the Potomac River town of Williamsport.

Williamsport officials decided after last year's plunge to turn it into a fundraiser for the local Boys and Girls Club and Williamsport fire and rescue services.

The Humane Society objected at first. But it now says the event has outgrown the Williamsport location.

The group says 155 people had registered as of Friday to take a midday dip in Greenbrier Lake with air temperatures expected to remain below freezing.
