Police Give Refunds For Unadvertised Speed Camera

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- Prince George's County police are issuing refunds for nearly 1,500 tickets issued by a speed camera after learning that the camera's location had not been advertised in a local newspaper.

Police said Wednesday that the camera was posted at St. Ignatius Loyola School in Fort Washington in November 2012. State law requires that a speed camera's location must be advertised in a local newspaper. Officers say an ad was submitted with the required information, but the camera's location was inadvertently removed from the final proof.

The department says it was told of the lack of advertising this month by a local TV station.

The camera has issued 2,059 tickets. Nearly 1,500 motorists will be refunded the $40 they paid for the ticket; the rest will be voided.
