Group Delivers Petitions For Bottle Deposit

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland PIRG is urging the state to support a measure to create a 5-cent redeemable bottle deposit.

Supporters brought about 7,000 signatures to the Maryland State House on Monday. Joanna Guy, a program associate with Maryland PIRG, says the initiative could triple the state's recycling rates and reduce litter.

But opponents say it's an outdated measure that ends up being a tax on consumers.

The Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Beverage Association says the state would be better served focusing on expanding comprehensive and popular curbside recycling that is already in place. The association says it also has the hidden cost of building and operating redundant recycling systems.
