Elections Officials Let D.C. Pot Initiative Go Forward
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Elections officials in the District of Columbia are allowing a ballot initiative to go forward that would let the city's voters decide whether possession of up to two ounces of pot should be legal in the city.
The initiative's backers now have to collect signatures from about 25,000 registered voters to get the measure on the ballot in November. The ballot measure the D.C. Board of Elections let move forward Tuesday would also legalize cultivation of up to three marijuana plants at one's home.
Earlier this year the D.C. Council passed a bill that would decriminalize the possession of less than one ounce of marijuana.
Mayor Vincent Gray is expected to sign the measure and Congress, which has a final say over the city's laws, is not expected to intervene.
