Christians In Baltimore Observe Good Friday

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Good Friday services are underway in Maryland. It is the most solemn day on the Christian calendar.

Meghan McCorkell has more on how Catholics in Maryland are marking this holy day.

While Good Friday is certainly a sad day for the Christian faith, some say it is also a time of hope.

It was a somber Mass as parishioners at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen remember the death of Jesus.

"It's a solemn move with Christ at the cross. We remember his suffering," a parishioner said.

The church joins Christians across the world, marking this Good Friday.

"This is the moment to entrust ourselves and our whole lives to Christ, our God," said Archbishop William Lori.

Parishioners say the lessons back then are still relevant today.

"It's really cool that this period of time really draws a lot of people of all languages and all cultures in the world, draws everybody together," a parishioner said.

Some Catholics are taking those lessons beyond the church walls.

"This is a day for celebrating hope," a parishioner said.

For the past 28 years on Good Friday, a group of Catholics walk around Baltimore, stopping at landmarks to pray.

"If walking through the streets and practicing our social action stations can maybe enlighten someone to praise God like we do, great," a parishioner said.

The group hopes its presence helps spread the message on this holy day.

A Stations of the Cross service will be held at the cathedral Friday night.

On Easter Sunday, the Pope will deliver the traditional "to the city and world address" from the Vatican.
