Sheriff Seeks Brighter Lights On Western Md. Road
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Washington County Sheriff Douglas Mullendore says he's pushing for brighter lights along a section of U.S. 40 in Hagerstown where two pedestrians were fatally struck by vehicles in recent weeks.
Mullendore told The Herald-Mail Thursday that he has asked the Maryland State Highway Administration to examine lighting along a divided stretch of road in Hagerstown called the Dual Highway.
City police say a 27-year-old woman was badly hurt Wednesday night when she was hit by a pickup truck while walking along the highway. Two other pedestrians have been fatally struck since March 18.
One of them, 28-year-old Lindsay Eldessoky, was hit by an on-duty sheriff's deputy. Mullendore says the investigation into that accident isn't complete.
The other victim, 58-year-old Lisa Wellham of Cumberland, died in a hit-and-run.
