Scott Garceau: Still Cool In The Pool

How many Subway sandwiches can one eat? So much for Jared's weight loss plan, Michael Phelps says he's lost the 30 pounds he put on. How many fairways can you miss and how many times will your two pair get beat by three of a kind. Eating like you and me, playing golf with Hank Haney and going all-in with that poker hand can wait, Michael Phelps is back in the pool and I think that's cool.

So many of the greats have wrestled with the retirement thing for all to see, Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Michael Jordan, Roger Clemens and Brett Favre all had those complicated good-byes. Retirement is tough enough when your 65, but retirement at 28 that can't be easy, especially when you're the best in the world at what you do.

This just in, the kid from Towson is one of the greatest sports stars of all-time. No Olympian can come close to Phelps 22 medals, 18 of them solid Gold. I keep hearing why is he coming back, I say why not come back. Could this lead to the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro? who knows, and really I don't care. If this latest splash turns into another chapter of Olympic glory great! If he says he's had enough in few months that's fine with me.

Michael Phelps doesn't have anything to prove to you, me or anybody else. He was competing in Arizona this week because he's the ultimate competitor and loves competing. I don't think he's doing it for fame, money, or any other preconceived plan. I think for the first time in a long time Michael Phelps is swimming simply for the fun of it and what's wrong with that.
