Ex-Social Security Worker Admits To Taking Bribes

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A former employee with the Social Security Administration has pleaded guilty to taking bribes from beneficiaries in exchange for higher benefits.

Christopher Payton, 46, of Mount Rainier, Md., entered the plea Tuesday in federal court in Washington. Prosecutors say Payton faces a likely range of 30 to 37 months in prison at sentencing on July 16.

According to a statement of offense, Payton worked in Social Security's Anacostia office. Prosecutors say between January and May of 2013, Payton told 13 beneficiaries that if they gave him a tip, he would cause extra benefits to go into their bank accounts.

Authorities say Payton received nearly $55,000 in payments from the beneficiaries.
