9 Injured In Building Collapse At Old Bethlehem Steel Plant

DUNDALK, Md. (WJZ)—Sparrows Point workers barely escaped after the roof came raining down on them. It happened during demolition at the historic Bethlehem Steel Mill Monday.

Christie Ileto has the latest on their conditions.

Investigators want to know what caused a roof to collapse at the old steel mill building in Sparrows Point, nearly killing almost a dozen workers Monday.

"It was a rush of them," said Rikki Jackson. "Just 13 or 14 emergency vehicles."

Paramedics rushed four workers to Shock Trauma by ambulance and by air.

"It was chaos," said iron worker Robert Lott. "Chaos all day long."

Lott used to work at the old steel mill and bolted to the plant to see if his former co-workers were hurt.

"It was a relief, a big relief," he said. "It's sad that anybody gets hurt and nobody wants to see someone get hurt on a job."

The steel mill shut down in 2012 and once employed tens of thousands of Baltimoreans. Ever since, buildings on the site are being torn down.

"The next step is that there's a full, thorough investigation into the matter, make sure all safety protocols were followed," said Delegate John Olszewski Jr.

MCM Management Corp. is handling the demolition and tells WJZ "they're investigating the incident and are focused on the recovery of the nine workers."

"Any job is dangerous in construction. Demolition is, definitely. A lot of people take it for granted---just because you take it down, it just falls over but that's not what happens," said Lott.

Still there are more questions than answers as authorities investigate why.

At least check, two people remain in critical condition. One of those taken to Shock Trauma has been discharged and the other is in fair condition.

The other five people were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.
