D.C. Water Investigating Sewer Overflow In C&O Canal

WASHINGTON (AP) -- D.C. Water says it's investigating a possible sewer overflow in the C & O Canal National Historical Park in Washington.

The utility says the Capital Crescent Trail is closed to the public between Water Street in Georgetown and Fletcher's Cove due to the overflow. D.C. Water is blocking off affected areas. Such overflows can be caused by heavy rainfall.

The National Park Service recommends using the C and O Canal Tow Path as an alternative in the area.

D.C. Water says it has mobilized repair crews, and contractors will work to decontaminate impacted areas.

The utility is investigating what caused this overflow and a prior sewage overflow on April 30.
