Ocean City Is Ready For Another Summer Of Family-Friendly Fun

OCEAN CITY, Md. (WJZ) --  Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer. And in Ocean City, tourism officials expect a great season.

Linh Bui traveled to the beach and has more about the new attractions and events.

People are hitting the road with one place in mind: the beach.

"The beaches are looking fabulous and I think people are ready for summer and they're ready for summer in Ocean City," said Donna Abbott, Ocean City tourism director.

Ocean City sees about 8 million visitors a year, most of them during the summer.

Tourism officials say the last few summers have been great, but that this season will be even better.

"It's been a long, cold winter, and I think there's a pent up demand for summer and for the beach," said Abbott.

"It's beautiful.  Just looking at the ocean, sitting on the sand," said one vacationer.

This summer, expect more family-friendly entertainment.

Local acts and tribute bands will perform on a brand new stage right on the boardwalk at Caroline Street.

"Bring your beach chair and your beach towel and just sit back and enjoy the beach with a concert. And the weekly concerts are free," said Abbott.

Plus, the first "Ocean City Sandfest" will bring master sculptors to the beach.

There are some new shops and restaurants on the boardwalk, but your all-time favorites are still there, too.

Two very popular events will be back again this year.  The Air Show featuring the Thunderbirds is held in June.  The tall ships return to Ocean City in August.
