Cozy Restaurant Closes After 85 Years, Owes $180,000 In Taxes

THURMONT, Md. (AP) -- Records show a family-run restaurant near Camp David in Thurmont that recently closed owes nearly $180,000 in federal and state taxes.

The Frederick News-Post reports that the Cozy Restaurant owes more than $153,000 in federal taxes and $26,000 to the state.

The restaurant closed Sunday after 85 years in business. It claimed to be the oldest restaurant in Maryland owned and operated by the founding family and had a longtime association with the nearby presidential retreat.

The Cozy's owner, Jerry Freeze, tells the News-Post that he's retiring and plans to sell much of his property. He says a motel next to the restaurant will stay open. Freeze is 78 years old and says there's no one else in the family who can run the business.
