Metro Fare Increases Take Effect Sunday

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Fares are going up for riders of Washington's Metro transit system.

Starting on Sunday fares will increase an average of 3 percent or about 10 cents per trip. Metro says short trips of 3 miles or less will increase from $1.70 to $1.75 during off-peak times and from $2.10 to $2.15 during rush hour.

Riders who take a Metro bus will pay a fare of $1.75 whether they use cash or a SmarTrip card. Today, fares are $1.60 for SmarTrip and $1.80 cash. Express bus fares will increase from $3.65 to $4.00.

Parking rates will also increase by 10 cents at all Metro-operated facilities. Parking rates at some Metro-operated facilities in Prince George's County will go up an additional 50 cents for a total 60 cent increase.
