Coast Guard Rescues Surfer, 3 Beach Patrol Members

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) -- The Coast Guard says its crews rescued a surfer and three Ocean City Beach Patrol members who were stuck in an inlet.

The rescue occurred on the afternoon of July Fourth.

The Coast Guard says it got a call from the Ocean City Communications Center reporting that a surfer had been carried into the inlet by a storm current. Three beach patrol swimmers went to help the surfer but also needed assistance.

The Coast Guard dispatched two boats that were in the area for a training exercise, and the four people were rescued.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Peter Tomlin of Coast Guard Station Ocean City says the waves on Friday were larger than usual because of Hurricane Arthur farther up the coast.
