Ex-Councilwoman Found Not Guilty In Md. Theft Case
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- An attorney and former Hagerstown councilwoman has been found not guilty of stealing more than $9,000 from a client she represented in a divorce case.
The Herald-Mail reports that a judge Thursday found Kelly Cromer not guilty in the Washington County Circuit Court case. Siamack Moaveni of Smithsburg, who Cromer represented, testified that his divorce settlement included half of an insurance settlement of more than $18,000 from a fire at his home, but Moaveni said Cromer never paid him his money. Cromer testified Moaveni owed her over $40,000 in legal fees and the insurance money was part of her payment.
The judge ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove that Cromer's actions constituted a theft, rather than a fee dispute.
Cromer was a councilwoman from 2005 to 2009.
