Double Honor As National Aquarium Marks 33rd Anniversary

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It's a double honor for the National Aquarium as it marks a big birthday. It's also ranked as one of the nation's top travel destinations.

As Gigi Barnett explains, it's cause for celebration.

Faces are usually seen plastered to the glass as hundreds take a look at the underwater wonders at the National Aquarium.

"My daughter said, 'I hope we don't get eaten by them,'" one visitor said.

And she is not alone. This week, travel website TripAdvisor just ranked the National Aquarium seventh on its top ten list of best aquariums in the nation.

A big draw to the aquarium is it's Black Tip Reef.

"We have three different types of sharks in here, Calypso, which is everyone's favorite, our 500 pound turtle and lots of other amazing fish," said aquarium spokesperson Kate Rowe.

Tabby Gray and her family traveled all the way from Seattle to see her favorite sea animal--sharks!

The national ranking comes as the aquarium celebrates its 33rd birthday and other anniversaries, too.

"It's incredibly exciting, so we are celebrating all kinds of fun stuff this week. Our 33rd anniversary, our one year anniversary of the Black Tip Reef. So being named in the top ten of the aquarium's in the U.S. is an amazing honor to have this week ," said Rowe.

The first 500 guests received a piece of cake to celebrate the National Aquarium's 33rd birthday.

California's Monterey Bay Aquarium topped TripAdvisor's best aquarium list.
