Orioles Wives Hit It Out Of The Park Helping Habitat For Humanity

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Some Orioles magic for one lucky family. The Orioles wives teamed up with Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake's "Women Build" project.

As Mary Bubala shows us, their hard work hit it out of the ballpark.

A group of Orioles wives, including Maria Wieters, Audie Fugett, Christina Markakis, Jenae Brach and Angela Showalter, rolled up their sleeves and put some muscle into a serious paint job.

"It's always a good thing to get involved with the other wives and do stuff, especially when our husbands are doing their job, working so hard, getting excited for a hopeful postseason," said Jenae Brach.

Women Build is an initiative of Habitat for Humanity International and aims to empower women to take action against poverty housing in their local communities.

This is the 13th Women Build house and it's not a one-day project. The women will be working on it for the next several months.

"The name in itself just says it. Women coming out to build, coming together. We're hammering nails, we're painting walls, we're laying floor tile and we're just coming out together as a group of women to laugh, enjoy and do something great within our community," said Shaneda Modlin, Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake.

But their work serves a serious purpose. The Orioles wives are rehabbing this home for a single mom of an autistic son.

"It gave me a chance to get out of a bad neighborhood and become a homeowner, which I didn't think I would be able to do for another 10 or maybe even 20 years," said Deborah Farrington, new homeowner.

The Orioles wives join hundreds of other females across the country who have helped Habitat for Humanity build homes for families in need.

Across the country, female volunteers have built more than 2,000 homes. Here in Maryland, Legg Mason supports Chesapeake's Habitat for Humanity.
