Redskins Franchise Sees Dramatic Drop In Merchandise Sales

WASHINGTON (WJZ) -- Millions of dollars are at stake as the pressure mounts to change the name of the Washington Redskins. As the team kicked off its season this weekend, it's seeing a dramatic drop in merchandise sales.

Gigi Barnett has reaction from football fans.

As their season heats up, Redskins apparel sales are down. Native Americans have repeatedly asked team owner Dan Snyder to change the name.

"It is offensive to us as indigenous people," said one.

But Snyder's not budging. He believes an overwhelming majority of Native Americans and fans are not offended by it.

"Look at all of the schools that have Redskins logos on them. They're making an issue out of nothing. Just let the guys play football," said football fan Tim Vlieth.

Last month, the team's sales dropped by more than 40 percent at a time when the NFL saw a boost across the league. But is it because of the team's name?

"I think they've got bigger problems than the logo and the moniker," said football fan Jeff Ruby.

The drop in sales may not have much to do with the name. A team spokesperson says it has more to do with the team's 3-13 record. Some fans agree.

"I think it's just getting the right people with the right players and I think they're going to have a better season this year," said football fan Brian Welage. "I really do."

According to NFLshop.com, Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is no longer in the top 25 of jersey sales. Two years ago, he set a record for jersey sales.
