Baltimore Entrepreneur Uses Educational Experience To Open A Tutoring Center

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Employment of kindergarten and elementary school teachers is projected to grow 12 percent from 2012 to 2022. Growth is expected due to projected increases in enrollment as well as declines in student-teacher ratios." For those looking to enter the field of education, it's important to note that not all career options involve teaching in a school environment.

Stephanie Turnbach is the founder and director of Rapid Success Tutoring, and offers some insight on how to use a degree in education to succeed outside of the standard classroom setting.

How has your education helped to lead you in this field?

"I have a bachelor's degree in early childhood and elementary education, and have taught preschool through fifth grade in both public and private schools. I also tutored students outside of school, and saw a need for tutoring for other grades and subjects in the Baltimore area. I feel my background in teaching as well as being involved with teenagers, college students, adult learners and university professors has given me a solid background for the business side as well as the educational side involved in the tutoring world."

How does your degree relate to your current role?

"My background in education is used in my daily life in relating to students and parents, as well as my own children. I am constantly teaching and educating parents, students and tutors. With tutoring, I feel you have to possess the same great qualities as you do in the classroom. I have also partnered with a non-profit group to provide an after-school homework club for low-income housing communities. Furthermore, it was during my teaching years that I realized the need for tutoring outside of the school is a huge benefit to many students."

What advice can you offer others going into education?

"Education is truly a wonderful, exciting and rewarding career if you love children and want to make a difference in students' lives. There are many different careers in education besides teaching, but I feel teaching will establish the foundation needed in other educational roles or positions."
